The Unveiling of Eedris Abdulkareem Colloquium

We’re unveiling the plan to host a Colloquium in honour of Nigeria’s Hip-hop icon and Activist Eedris Abdulkareem.

UVA, in partnership with Lakreem Entertainment, uses this medium to invite the general public to the Eedris Abdulkareem Colloquium, a special edition of Freedom Vibes, the sixth in a series of events geared towards promoting artists’ freedom of expression, and the use of music and artistic expressions for civic engagements.

We’re addressing a recent order by the Nigeria Police Force threatening artists using police uniform in movies and skits or portraying the Police in “bad light”.

Celebrating Taiwo Ajai-Lycett

The management and staff of Unchained Vibes Africa congratulate our matriarchal Dame Taiwo Ajai-Lycett, OON on winning the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) on Saturday 14th May 2022.

 The award is a recognition of her exceptional talent and many years of positive and impressive contributions to the creative sector. We are excited to see her reap the fruits of her efforts and wish her many more lifetime achievements.

Freedom Vibes Poetry Concert Report

On April 30, 2022, at the end of the Democracy Vibes Summit organized by Unchained Vibes Africa, a special edition of Freedom Vibes Series was hosted – the Freedom Vibes Poetry Concert. The concert brought together leading Nigerian spoken word poets for a convergence with Afro-pop musicians to promote freedom of expression. It featured the best of performance poets in Nigeria including Dike Chuwumerije, Sage Hassan, RezThaPoet, Iquo Diana-Abasi and the invigorating spirit of the fast rising Victory Ashaka.

COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF DEMOCRACY VIBES SUMMIT ON THE THEME “PROTECTING CREATIVITY THROUGH PARTICIPATORY REFORMS”

On Saturday, 30th April 2022, Democracy Vibes, a summit on censorship and artistic freedom, was organized by Unchained Vibes Africa at the Freedom Park in Lagos. It was a hybrid event with many delegates physically in attendance and others participating virtually via Zoom webinar. The theme of the summit “Protecting Creativity through Participatory Reforms” inspired meaningful policy dialogues and debates among stakeholders and delegates revolving around censorship, actions and inactions of state and non-state actors as well as laws and regulations hindering artistic freedom in Nigeria.

The Democracy Vibes: a one-day summit on censorship and artistic freedom as well as Freedom Vibes 5.0, a poetry concert.

The summit is bringing together musicians, filmmakers, theatre practitioners, comedians, poets, cultural policy experts and other practitioners in the Nigerian creative sector as well as civil society organizations to facilitate meaningful dialogue with government officials on the need for policy reforms that will address issues and concerns around recent government actions and policies that may undermine creativity and threaten artistic freedom.

Untold Stories video project by the World Movement For Democracy

Our partner, the World Movement is calling for proposals for their new “Untold Stories video project”. Four short documentary videos by democracy activists/civil society leaders will be screened at their upcoming 11th World Movement Global Assembly in Taiwan this October in its Untold Stories video series.
