Freedom Vibes

Freedom Vibes is our flagship project. It is a series of events geared towards promoting artists’ freedom
of expression, and the use of music and artistic expressions for civic engagements.

Artistic freedom can be defined as “the freedom to imagine, create and distribute diverse cultural expressions free of governmental censorship, political interference or the pressures of non-state actors.

To advocate for reforms in government actions, policies, and laws that hinder artistic freedom

To educate and mobilize members of the artistic community to become democratic and human rights activists.

To advocate for free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria.

Unchained Vibes will build on the virtual workshop it organized during the previous project on international and African regional human rights instruments guaranteeing artistic freedom. It will expand the scope to include training on the new Electoral Act 2022 to familiarize socially conscious artists and creative professionals with the provisions of the new law to further strengthen their advocacy capabilities. The audience will comprise young upcoming artists and local civil society actors operating across Nigeria and speakers will include veteran artists, artistic freedom advocacy experts, human rights lawyers, and democracy advocacy NGOs from local and international partner organizations. The workshop will include a review of freedom of expression and assembly protocols and instruments, the current restrictions on expression and assembly, support structures for artists at risk, and methodologies for artistic messaging for democratic and human rights campaigns. The two-day workshops with 11 training modules will cover the 6 geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

The organization hosts virtual-physical hybrid advocacy shows periodically where it convenes artists and activists to discuss free expression and assembly. Participants review recent reports of restrictions and abuse targeting artistic freedom, discuss policy reforms, and design advocacy campaigns. From July 2022 – March 2023, the scope of the conversations will be expanded to include advocacy for free and fair elections, sensitization, and mobilization of young people to become active in civic engagements. Artistic performances and exhibits will complement these discussions. Unchained Vibes will air the performances on social media.

Freedom Vibes Series

Unchained Vibes hosts a hybrid physical-virtual monthly show featuring artistic performances and exhibits highlighting the state of artists’ freedom of expression as well as conversations around the topic. Participants review recent reports of restrictions and abuse targeting artistic freedom, discuss policy reforms, and design advocacy campaigns.

The organization hosts a one-day virtual-physical hybrid forum each year called Freedom Vibes Summit, aimed at bringing together artists, human rights activists, civil society organizations, cultural policy experts, and government officials to facilitate meaningful dialogue on free expression and assembly. It invites government officials from broadcasting, censorship and media regulation, culture and tourism, and security agencies. At the summit, Unchained Vibes premieres a video documentary that highlights the restrictions and abuse that artists face in expressing themselves and advancing democratic reform in Nigeria, drawing on its monitoring and documentation. It complements the documentary with a concert and art show highlighting these issues, before facilitating a series of conversations on needed government reforms to advance free expression and assembly in Nigeria.
